Principles of Product
Teka's principles for how we build product. Living — principles get added and cultivated over time. A principle earns its place here only once it has changed a real decision, not because it sounds good.
Build to Discover
Stand the real thing up — even in a staging location, even before its final home exists — rather than architecting it purely in the abstract. The act of building surfaces the true flows, the real architecture, and the actual function in a way planning never does.
A staging build is a deliberate counterweight to abstract design: it keeps the plan honest, exposes what's missing, and reveals structure you couldn't see from outside. Build it, read what the build taught you, fold that back in.
Live example: the Kindo nebula is being built in the Teka space first — not merely parked there, but because building it is how we find the flows and architecture before it has a permanent home.
Decency
The product is decent to the people who use it. Honest defaults, no dark patterns, no manufactured urgency, no manipulation of attention or spend. It respects the user's time, data, money, and intent — and where there's a choice between what's easy for us and what's fair to them, it goes to fair.
Decency is a floor, not a feature.
Modularity
Build from composable, separable parts. Distinct concerns stay un-conflated — separate axes kept separate (theme vs. skin, identity vs. permission, content vs. presentation). Pieces can be swapped, reused, and recomposed without a rewrite.
Modularity is what lets the product evolve fast without every change rippling into everything.
More principles will be added and cultivated here over time. A principle belongs on this page once it has shaped a real product decision — until then it is a candidate, not a principle.
Core Before Cleverness
Reach core function and operability first — the simple version that genuinely works — before reaching for a cleverer one. Build on what is already realized and proven; invent a new approach only when there is a clear, tangible improvement to be had. Nothing major gets reinvented while the base is still being made real.
Restraint here is not timidity. The simple, working version is the fastest path to the truth that [[Build to Discover]] is after — and once core function is tangible, the genuine improvements stop being guesses and become obvious. Those are the ones worth inventing.
Live example: the Nebula Canvas v1 is deliberately small — open a nebula, view your open tabs or every page, click and sort — mirroring what the kindo-demo reference already does. New invention is held back until that core view is real and clear.
